Mesh House ~

‘Mesh House’ takes an existing 1960s brick dwelling in Concord, NSW, and implements concepts of porosity to dissolve the boundaries of the structure and create connections to the surrounding environment and community.

This dwelling is defined by the mesh boardwalk that bisects the structure and separates it into two archipelagos – one side offering private spaces for the young family and the other side connecting grandma’s bedroom to the living areas. Porosity to the surrounding community is afforded through rotating mesh window openings, creating an invitation to step out of the house and engage with neighbours.

As the needs of the family shift, so does the response of the structure. Rolling inbuilt wardrobes allow rooms to expand and contract, and windows can flip and fold to offer privacy or openness when needed. As the family ages-in-place, the mesh boardwalk can be altered to offer ramped accessibility across the site.
